The New Generation REMUS 100 (the US Navy MK18 Mod 1) features advanced technology and capabilities that are the first of their kind in the industry, enabling customers to have increased autonomy and creativity during missions. A man-portable Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV) designed for rapid deployment, it can be easily transported via helicopter and launched from a dock or any vessel of opportunity. With a maximum operating depth of 100 meters and a mission duration of up to 12 hours, it is ideal for rapid, low-logistics deployments. The UUV features advanced technology and capabilities that are the first of their kind in the industry, enabling customers to have increased autonomy and creativity during missions.
The New Generation REMUS 100 UUV combines the reliability of the original REMUS 100 UUV that customers know and trust with new features and capabilities, such as advanced core electronics, a flexible navigation suite with an exclusive conformal Doppler Velocity Log (DVL) and an open architecture platform for advanced autonomy.
Advanced Core Electronics: It features cutting-edge core electronics (CE) designed to replace not only the previous REMUS motherboard but also the CPU stack, emergency board and six serial cards. The new CE board is smaller and lighter than the components it replaces and it uses an ARM +FPGA architecture that makes it both potent and versatile while consuming less than 5W of power—about 25 percent of the power required by the earlier version.
Flexible Navigation Suite: It includes an exclusive conformal design, phased array transducer 300kHz DVL in the rear of the vehicle. This design significantly increases bottom-tracking range to improve overall navigation performance. In addition, the REMUS 100 will now be available with a choice of inertial navigation system (INS) to suit each customer’s navigation needs and budget.
High Capacity Battery Pack: Equipped with two or three (depending on the model) of Hydroid’s latest 18650 Li-Ion based packs, the New Generation REMUS 100 UUVs will carry more energy than ever before. The packs use 3.2Ah Li-Ion cells and have the same electrical configuration as the REMUS 600 pack currently in use.
Modular Elliptical Nose: The redesigned elliptical nose reduces drag by 20 percent. In addition, it’s acoustically transparent, so that the acoustic communications (ACOMMS) transducer can be relocated inside the nose. Because the new nose uses the same modular interface on the existing REMUS 100, it can be easily integrated on both current payload modules and the New Generation REMUS 100.
Open Architecture: The New Generation REMUS 100 expands on existing REMUS capabilities by adding an open architecture platform for advanced autonomy, making the vehicle more versatile. This platform is realized with a publish subscribe database based on a Robotic Operating System (ROS) on a second processor. The new REMUS “front seat” performs control functions using well-tested, reliable proprietary control software. The “back seat” performs mission tasks such as side scan sonar data logging and extensibility using Hydroid, customer or third party applications.
The compact size of the REMUS 100 allows for economical shipping and two-man operation capability. It also eliminates the need for larger vessels and costly special handling equipment.
With a track record second to none, the REMUS 100 is the most prolific compact AUV to be selected by the U.S. Navy Fleet for their mine countermeasure operations. The system boasts over ten years of continuous product development and thousands of hours of field operation.
An intuitive Vehicle Interface Program (VIP) allows anyone to become an AUV operator with just a few days of training.

Over the past several years, the REMUS 100 AUV has quickly become the cornerstone of the coastal AUV market, with thousands of missions, and tens of thousands of mission hours to its credit. No other AUV system can come close to rivaling REMUS' proven track record for system quality and dependability.
Auxiliary equipment on all configurations includes two (2) transponders with floats, weights and mooring lines, laptop, power data box, ranger, towfish, operations and maintenance spares, and operations and maintenance manual.
All Hydroid AUVs have core systems designed to monitor the status and operation of essential components. Health monitoring includes batteries, motors, sensors and communications as well as conditions such as depth or water ingress. If an abnormality is detected, then an alarm is raised. During supervised missions this will be transmitted to the operator enabling them to decide if the vehicle should return from its mission. When the vehicle is operating autonomously, the response to an alarm is determined by the preselected response listed in the mission plan. This could include an emergency abort to preserve vehicle security.
Operators can monitor the AUV’s progress and status via an acoustic link. This also enables amendments to the mission plan to be sent to the vehicle along with position updates if required. The HiPAP or Ranger positioning systems provide acoustic aiding to the on-board IMU and DVL equipment to make the realtime position solution as accurate as possible. This data is displayed on the payload computer screen to give the operations team confidence that the mission is progressing as planned and there are no gaps in the data. When the AUVs are on the surface, they can communicate via Wi-Fi or radio frequency with the operator. They are also equipped with GPS receivers to update the IMU position with the most accurate information available.
To assist with emergency localization and recovery operations, the AUVs can be equipped with emergency radio beacons, strobe lights and satellite communications. In the event of an emergency ascent, the position and status of the vehicle can be sent via the Iridium network to the operators and home base simplifying postemergency localization. If two-way satellite communication is enabled, a revised mission plan can be sent to the vehicle from anywhere in the world.
